How to score sit-outs in an Americano
2 min read · Updated 31 October 2026
With 5, 9 or 10 players, someone rests each round. Rotate it so nobody sits out twice before everyone has sat out once, and agree up front how a sit-out scores: zero, the player’s own average, or a fixed number of points.
Fair rotation
Padellama picks who sits out by fewest sit-outs so far, then by who rested longest ago. Here are 9 players on 2 courts over 9 rounds:

With 5 players on one court, one sits out each round and 5 rounds gives everyone one rest. With 10 players on 2 courts, two sit out each round.

- Zero: simple and strict. Fine when everyone sits out the same number of times.
- Average: the fairest when sit-outs aren’t equal. Resting neither helps nor hurts you.
- Fixed: half the match points by default. Easy to explain courtside, and a small boost for players who usually score less.
Sit-out points are added once the whole round is scored. To plan rounds around sit-outs, see how many rounds to play.
